Smarter Living in Action: A Resident Success Story

📍 Location: Scotland

🏢 Property Type: Student Accommodation

🛏️ Rooms: 127

In a student community in Stirling, the property management team wanted to enhance residents' living conditions by promoting energy efficiency and sustainability. They sought to understand utility consumption better and encourage residents to adopt more sustainable habits.

How they did it

To achieve these goals, smart sensors were installed in all 127 bedrooms to monitor environmental factors like temperature and energy usage. This technology provided real-time data, enabling the team to identify areas for improvement.

Recognising that data alone isn't enough, the team engaged directly with residents. They organised informational sessions about the impact of overheating and launched an incentive program: residents who reduced their average room electricity consumption over 30 days had a chance to win a £100 Amazon voucher.

The Results

These initiatives led to a noticeable improvement in living conditions for residents, and an impressive positive effect for the sustainability of the building:

  • Temperature Reduction: Average room temperatures decreased from 23.1°C to 22.5°C within a month.

  • Energy Savings: Over a 200-day heating season, the community saved 88,900 kWh of energy.

  • Carbon Footprint: The community reduced its carbon emissions by 18,669 kg.

Residents reported feeling more comfortable and empowered, knowing their efforts contributed to a more sustainable living environment. The collaborative approach fostered a sense of community and shared responsibility for environmental impact.

Combining Utopi technology with resident engagement can lead to significant improvements in sustainability and living conditions, which is the name of our game! Small changes in daily habits, supported by real-time data and community initiatives, can make a substantial difference for both people and planet.
