Low-carbon travel: 3 train routes though the UK.

Rail is one of the lowest-carbon, greenest ways to travel, only contributing 1.4% to total UK transport emissions. Let’s explore how to make the most of this green option in the UK.

As a student, exploring the UK by train can be a sustainable and budget-friendly way to discover the country's natural beauty and cultural attractions. Here are three scenic train routes it might be worth checking out in the spring holidays:

1.        The Caledonian Sleeper: London to Inverness

If you're after a sleeper train like the Caledonian Sleeper, it's best to book early, as cabins fill up fast. This overnight service connects London Euston to the Scottish Highlands, allowing you to wake up in the picturesque city of Inverness, but you can board or depart from a great number of stops along the route.

Departing from London in the evening, the Caledonian Sleeper winds its way through the stunning landscapes of northern England and the Scottish Lowlands. Along the way, you'll pass by historic castles, rolling hills, and tranquil lochs.

Upon arrival in Inverness, you'll be perfectly positioned to explore the natural wonders of the Highlands. Spend a day hiking in Cairngorms National Park, where you can spot red deer, golden eagles, and the elusive Scottish wildcat.  From there, you can take a scenic train journey to the Isle of Skye, known for its dramatic coastline, medieval castles, and the iconic Fairy Pools.

To save on your travels, think about purchasing a Railcard, which can provide up to 34% off Anytime, Off-Peak, and Advance fares.

2.     Along the Southern Coast: London to Penzance

For a more leisurely spring adventure, consider the Scenic Rail Britain route from London to Penzance.  This journey takes you through the picturesque English countryside, with stops along the way to explore historic towns and coastal villages.

Departing from London, your train will wind its way through the rolling hills of the Cotswolds, where you can disembark in charming towns like Moreton-in-Marsh or Chipping Campden. Continue your journey southwest, passing through the dramatic landscapes of Devon and Cornwall, before arriving in the seaside town of Penzance.

In Penzance, you can explore the stunning Minack Theatre, a unique open-air amphitheatre carved into the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. From there, take a short train ride to the nearby town of St. Ives, known for its vibrant art scene and beautiful beaches.

3.      Midlands Daytripper: Coventry to Nottingham

For a shorter urban train journey through the UK, consider the route from London to Manchester. This route connects two of the country's major cities, offering opportunities to explore vibrant cultural hubs and historic landmarks.

Departing from London, your train will take you through the bustling suburbs of the capital, passing by iconic landmarks like the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye. As you leave the city centre, the scenery transitions to the rolling hills and quaint villages of the English countryside.

One potential stop along the way is the historic town of Watford, home to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London - The Making of Harry Potter. Here, you can step into the magical world of the beloved book and film series, exploring the original sets, costumes, and props used in the productions.

Continuing your journey, the train will take you through the Midlands region, passing by the city of Birmingham. Known as the "City of a Thousand Trades," Birmingham boasts a rich industrial heritage and a thriving modern cultural scene. Consider disembarking here to visit the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery or explore the city's vibrant food and music scenes.

As you approach the destination of Manchester, you'll be greeted by the city's iconic skyline. Manchester is renowned for its dynamic arts and music scene, as well as its rich history in science and industry. Spend time exploring the city's museums, such as the Museum of Science and Industry, or immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere of the Northern Quarter, known for its independent shops, cafes, and street art. For food – we recommend trying Street Urchin, 10 Tib Lane or Higher Ground.

Remember, when planning your spring train travels in the UK, be sure to research and book your tickets in advance to take advantage of the best deals and discounts. You could also think about using a Railcard to save on your fares and make your journey more affordable. Wherever you decide to go, it could be worth booking a hostel at your destination to make a short affordable getaway out for your travel and give yourself enough time to really explore.
